Job Purpose and Overview

With minimal supervision, this position supports product development projects from concept through commercialization for Bakery Ingredients and/or Finished Bakery Products and/or Pipeline innovation.  As part of a team, assists to develop and test formulas and processes for new products, quality improvements and cost reductions. May oversee the work of Interns or Technicians, providing guidance and assigning daily activities. Special assignments will be available to assist with career track decisions.

 

This position requires you to work onsite 5 days a week at our Burlington site. 

 

What will you do as a Food Scientist Ii at Dawn Foods? 

  • Assists in gathering knowledge of our customers, consumers, and competitors.  Brings innovative ideas to support strategic plans and enable R&D to apply this knowledge to assigned projects.
  • Continues to develop strong cross-functional relationships both within the R&D community as well as externally with, Marketing, Insights, Quality, Operations, Engineering, Regulatory, etc.
  • Collaborates with manager and team to develop contingency plans.
  • Actively seeks to enhance technical skills via project experience, seminars, professional meetings, additional course work, and/or literature.  Contributes to a learning environment for the team.  Creates a robust personal development plan in collaboration with the manager.
  • Develop skill set as a subject matter expert to colleagues and management.
  • Obtains and broadens knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes, safety procedures, GMPs, and food regulations.
  • Seeks, evaluates, and utilizes technical information from external and internal sources (Vendors and senior R&D technical experts) to achieve objectives.  Applies technical knowledge to drive new innovation and change.
  • With minimal supervision develops product formulations, plans and executes scientific experiments using established laboratory/pilot plant/operations methods.  Interprets results and translates them into possible solutions.
  • Executes pilot lab runs, consumer tests, plant trials, and validation trials.
  • Leads small and medium projects with minimal direction and demonstrates effective teamwork.  Effectively manages time and delivers projects on time and in full. 
  • Maintain ingredient inventory and lot code tracking.  Keep accurate records of lab work and data analysis. Works with internal resources to quickly communicate needed information in case of recalls.
  • Safely operates, cleans, and maintains lab ware and equipment used in a testing environment, while adhering to sanitation requirements in the handling and preparation of food products.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with the Dawn specification system and write product, ingredient, and process specs.  Maintain internal records.  Ensures all ingredients and finished goods meet customer and FDA compliance guidelines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.                                                                        
  • Demonstrates the "Dawn Values" of Team Dawn and Supports the Circle of Excellence.
  • Travel up to 15%

 

What Does It Take to be a Food Scientist II at Dawn Foods?  

Below are the minimum qualifications to be a fit for this job.   

  • Bachelor’s Degree in food science or related science field and 5 years of work experience in a food ingredient facility; or 9 years of relevant work experience in lieu of the bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong interest in food science, baking, and food ingredients. 
  • SAP and Optiva software experience preferred.

Compensation Range: 

$80,340 -$120,520 with bonus potential
